Charlie’s first stop is Eve Gardiner’s derelict London townhouse. Once in London, Charlie begins her quest for her long-lost cousin, Rose, who supposedly died in France during WWII. However, I soon realised that the pregnancy works as a plot device to relocate Charlie from New York to London. At first, I was frustrated by the very unoriginal pregnant-out-of-wedlock plot. Clair is a nineteen-year-old American college girl. For example, “Chapter 1: Charlie 1947” followed by “Chapter 2: Eve 1915.” The clearly structured and chronologically ordered chapters make both stories easy to follow. This work of historical fiction interweaves two strong female protagonists living in two different eras with true stories of war and friendship. I give you, The Alice Network (2017) by Kate Quinn.
